Course Description and Target Audience
The course focuses on the nature of poor effort, exaggeration, and malingering on psychological tests. Base rates of cognitive exaggeration will be discussed with an emphasis on cognitive assessment approaches to exaggeration detection. There are no known potential risks to attending this course.
The target audience is mental health providers (advanced doctoral level psychology trainees, psychologists in practice, master’s level clinicians etc).
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to describe why it is important to assess for validity of subject performance during cognitive and psychological assessments.
- Participants will be able to explain the multi-modal, multi-method strategy in exaggeration detection.
- Participants will demonstrate an understanding of common instruments used to detect performance invalidity among cognitive testing.
- Participants will demonstrate an understanding of common scales used to detect self-report invalidity on the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF.
Presenter Information
Robert L Denney, Psy.D., is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist, who has practiced in the field for over 20 years. He has published numerous times in the area of malingering and deception. He has also presented this topic to audiences nationwide at the National Academy of Neuropsychology.

Course Description and Target Audience
This workshop will focus on the nature of clinical neuropsychology with an emphasis on how general clinical practitioners can better understand neuropsychological methods and reports. This course will cover a quick functional neuroanatomy overview with emphasis on cognitive functioning. Common neuropsychological tests will be presented with particular emphasis on neurocognitive screening measures, such as the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS).
The target audience is mental health providers (advanced doctoral level psychology trainees, psychologists in practice, master’s level clinicians etc).
Learning Objectives
- Participants will understand the nature of clinical neuropsychology and the specialty’s basic training requirements.
- Participants will be able to describe the basic functional neuroanatomical bases for important areas of cognitive function.
- Participants will become aware of the most commonly used neuropsychology measures.
- Participants will demonstrate the knowledge required to administer and rudimentarily interpret the RBANS.
Presenter Information
Robert L Denney, Psy.D., is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist, who has practiced in the field for over 20 years. He has published and presented in the field of forensic neuropsychology numerous times and has also testified as an expert witness in the area of neuropsychology and neuroimaging. Dr. Denney has taught neuroanatomy and neuropsychology at the graduate level for 15 years. He is a fellow of APA Division 40, clinical neuropsychology and past president of the National Academy of Neuropsychology.
